New Work

Due to a new job, I had to take a short break from making books. I am happy to say that I am now getting back to it. Teaching full time is exhausting and a bit draining. I often wonder how other teachers manage to make work, care for their families, and have any time to recharge. I love working with my students, but I usually come home drained.

I was fortunate to be asked to teach a continuing education class for educators, and it was just the boost I needed to motivate and inspire me. I started making samples of structures and ended up making a small, hand-painted book that I have decided to edition. It is outside of the normal scope of what I usually focus on in terms of content, but it brought me back to my roots. That is to say, when I started making books, I began by using only what was accessible in my home studio.

This little book is about the phases of the moon. It is hand painted with gouache. The text will be transferred onto the surface. It is currently a work in progress, but I am happy with where it is headed.

Wild Women Artists

I'm thrilled to announce that I have been asked to participate in the Wild Women Artists Exhibit in October as the guest artist. The theme for this year—By The Book—will feature the project Alphabet Soup. Each artist invited up to five other local artists to create a letter to contribute to the exhibit. Art will be for sale with a portion of the proceeds going toward Renown Healing Arts Institute for Breast Cancer.

Here's a sneak-peek of one of my letters.

Be sure to join us in Reno at the Summit Mall for the exhibition and sale from Friday, October 20 through Sunday, October 22.

College Book Art Association, Folium

I was honored to be asked to contribute to the first ever, CBAA print portfolio. The artists included in this collection are all super talented, well recognized artists
that I have admired since I started making books and printing. Never, in my wildest dreams, did I imagine my work would be along side theirs. This is a beautiful
set of prints.

My print--Crank Bugs--was printed on Magnani Pescia and Kozo using both linoleum blocks and photopolymer plates made from scratch negatives and rubylith.

The College Book Art Association is excited to present
Folium
CBAA’s inaugural print portfolio/exchange to benefit the CBAA academic journal, Openings: Studies in Book Art.

A sampling of the prints included in the portfolio:
Inspired by the potential for Openings to grow as a platform for critical and theoretical investigation, the theme for this portfolio is Folium (plural foliums or folia). Folium, in Latin, means leaf: a leaf of a book or a tree. The mathematical folium of Descartes is a curve consisting of two infinite branches sharing a common asymptote; the curve has a double point and a leaf-shaped loop. In anatomy, a folium is a wrinkle on the surface of the brain. In geology, a folium is a thin, leaf-like layer or stratum occurring especially in metamorphic rock. Together these definitions suggest growth and layers, and they lead to a visually rich collection of prints: prints with references to math, leaves, folded paper, and suggestions of the infinite.

The imaginative variety of prints and folios in the Folium collection range from classic letterpress printed broadsides with text to purely visual interpretations of the theme to contemporary pieces utilizing tactile materials and inventive techniques. The imagery includes leaves and algebraic curves, as well as references to book pages and the brain. The participating artists are professionals in the field of book arts: printers, binders, educators and fine artists. In the spirit of our journal, Openings, this portfolio is our offering to the future of book arts.

Participating Artists: Megan Adie, Tia Blassingame, Mare Blocker & Jessica Spring, Denise Bookwalter, Macy Chadwick, Julie Chen, Bridget elmer, Lucy holtsnider, Andrea Kohashi, Sara Langworthy, Susan Lowdermilk, Amy Lund, Kimberly Maher, emily Martin, Kerry McAleer-Keeler, Allison Leialoha Milham, Kathleen o’Connell, Candida Pagan, Radha Pandey, Camden M. Richards, Jaime Lynn Shafer, Barbara Tetenbaum, emily Tipps, Sara White, and Karen Zimmermann.

Edition: 50, with 25 copies for distribution to the participants, 24 numbered copies offered for sale, and one copy for the CBAA archives.

Dimensions: Printed pieces: 9" x 12". enclosure: 10" x 13" x 5/8"

Media: This collection consists of flat prints, broadsides and folios on a variety of papers using any print medium or combination of media, including letterpress, offset, digital printing and/or other printmaking techniques. The complete set is housed in a custom enclosure.

$975

Review of Old Geiger Grade

Picture

A special thanks to Levi Sherman and Alicia Bailey (at Abecedarian Gallery in Denver, Colorado) for writing such a lovely review of my most recent work--
Old Geiger Grade.
Here's a little excerpt:

"This historical emphasis is only a springboard; Old Geiger Grade is more contemplative than educational. To set the scene, Shafer leads the reader into the 1860s Wild West through the book’s outer elements. Upon extracting the book from its slipcase, the reader finds it folded into a paper wrap. Printed on the wrap’s inside front is a list of “Stagecoach Rules”. Presented without comment, the rules could be taken directly from some historical document, but they have a quaint charm that feels almost too good to be true. Regardless, the rules form an imposing block of text on the front flap, physically barring the reader from entry into the book. From the ominous prohibition against discussing “stagecoach robberies and Indian uprisings” to lighter guidelines about gentlemanly behavior, the rules raise the stakes for the narrative inside. The reader is introduced to the Nineteenth Century with all of its implications for race and gender, not to mention a looming specter
of danger."

Nevada Arts Council, Jackpot Grant

Just before Christmas, I learned that I was one of the recipients of the Nevada Arts Council Jackpot Grants. I am overwhelmed by the support for the arts here in Nevada. I have never known a community that offered so much support to local artists. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to wok in this community.

The funds that I receive will be put toward my next book project which focuses on corruption in the 1860s and corruption in contemporary society. The comparison is meant to be reflective. More to come as I get started printing.

Black Rock Press Redfield Fellowship Artist Lecture and Exhibit

Tuesday, April 12th, I will be presenting my work and experiences at the Black Rock Press. This is the final year of my fellowship and this past year has been so busy! Lots of new work to share and many experiences to reflect on. My fellowship ends this summer. I am a bit sad to be saying farewell, but happy that it is only farewell to my role as fellow and not farewell to the Black Rock Press. I have made many new friends and learned so much while working here.

If you are in town, come join me at the Black  Rock Press at 5:30 on April 12, 2016.

PBS show ArtEffects

So honoerd to have been featured on PBS recently. The producer contacted me a few months ago and asked if she could come down to the studio and interview me. I thought it would be a little interview, maybe 10 minutes long or so, but it turned out to be a rather in depth event: videographer, photographer, a few producers and other PBS staff. All in all, it was a bit nerve wrecking, but exciting.

Thanks to the fabulous KNPB staff and their interest in my work. Check out the episode of ArtEffects here:

Upcoming Exhibit: WordsMatter

I am pleased to announce that two of my works will be included in the upcoming exhibit WordsMatter in Chicago, IL.
The exhibit is part of Chicago Artists Month and will run from October 3 - 29, 2015.
"Artists’ Books are a unique artform and a challenging medium to display in traditional art shows. They are often under glass, and the viewer has access to only the spread selected by the show installers, or the cover. We hope to create a one month long Book Arts Library where anyone interested can come and view the book from cover to cover."
Additionally, various supporting events have been arranged in conjunction with the exhibit:
"We have arranged for four speakers to share their work in the book arts. Melissa Jay Craig, Jen Farrell, Marnie Galloway, and Shawn Sheehy will speak on Wednesday evenings in October. These artists all pursue the book and paper arts in very different ways. Other events and speakers are in the works."
For additional information please visit the WordsMatter website or Facebook.

If you are in the Chicago area be sure to stop by the exhibit and view the work in person:

23 SANDY GALLERY PRESENTS HELLO HEDI: AN EXHIBITION CELEBRATING INFLUENTIAL BOOK ARTIST HEDI KYLE

HELLO HEDI is a juried exhibition of book art celebrating influential book artist Hedi Kyle. For this show, 23 Sandy invited artists to submit book art inspired by the complex and innovative work of Hedi Kyle.

This exhibition features 56 books by 53 artists, all of which emulate or adapt the book structures Hedi invented. These include the flag structure, the Wunderkabinett, the blizzard book, pivoting panels, piano hinge, fishbone fold, the spider book and more. They’re made out of everything from tyvek to human hair, and they’re about everything from nautical terms to dating to the Sex Pistols.

Hedi, who made her first book in Berkeley, CA in 1968, revolutionized the field of book arts with her penchant for play, material explorations and willingness to share. Ever since her childhood in Germany, she has had a habit of collecting and making things out of found objects. However, it was only after she began a career as a conservator that she became intimately familiar with book structures and began experimenting and teaching workshops about bookmaking. The pieces exhibited in this show explode with love for Hedi Kyle and the impact she has had on the world of book arts.

This exhibit features book and paper arts related works including limited edition and one-of-a-kind artist books and sculptural books by the following artists: Islam Aly, Susan Angebranndt, Jody Arthur, Charlene Asato, Alice Austin, Alicia Bailey, Cristina Balbiano d’Aramengo, Anita Bigelow, Ginger Burrell, R D Burton, Valerie Carrigan, Macy Chadwick, Laurie Corral, Jenny Craig, Dea Fischer, Alisa Golden, Joan Iversen Goswell, C J Grossman, Penelope Hall, Ian Hampton, Karen Hardy, Lotta Helleberg, Jennie Hinchcliff, Monica Holtsclaw, Paula Jull, Hilke Kurzke, Jihae Kwon, Roberta Lavadour, Louise Levergneux, Kyoko Matsunaga, Sarah Matthews, Scott McCarney, Tekla McInerney, Bea Nettles, Carl Norby, Bonnie Thompson Norman, Lisa Onstad, Virginia Phelps, Amy Pirkle, Gina Pisello, Katherine Puliso, Maria Veronica San Martin, Elizabeth Sanford, Judy Sgantas, Jaime Shafer, Fruma Shrensel, Jessica Spring, Elsi Vassdal Ellis, Mark Wangberg, Laurie Weiss, Helga Widmann, Rutherford Witthus, Dorothy A. Yule and Hedi Kyle herself.

HELLO HEDI was juried by the owner of 23 Sandy Gallery, Laura Russell. Laura Russell is a photographer and book artist who creates hand-bound, limited-edition artist books that incorporate photographs of our urban landscape and tell a story about our culture and our communities. She has participated in national and international book arts and fine art exhibitions, and she lectures frequently on various topics related to the book and paper arts. Her books are collected by individual collectors and are in major collections at museums, libraries, universities and corporations. Laura evaluated over 180 entries for HELLO HEDI, carefully rating each book based on craftsmanship, concept and story.

A full online catalog for HELLO HEDI can be found at:  www.23sandy.com/works/hellohedi
